One Month In: Is the Congestion Relief Zone Working?

It’s been one month since the Congestion Relief Zone took effect, and many New Yorkers are already seeing a positive impact. But what does the data say?

Last week, the latest data from the MTA confirmed what many hoped: the Congestion Relief Zone is reducing traffic and improving travel times across the region.

  • Manhattan’s busiest streets saw 1 million fewer vehicles in January.

  • Average trip times have improved by 10% to 30%, with major reductions at key crossings:

    • Holland Tunnel: 48% faster

    • Williamsburg Bridge: 30% faster

    • Canal Street: 27% faster

  • Subway and bus ridership has increased, showing a shift away from car travel.

While the Congestion Relief Zone is delivering promising results, its future isn’t guaranteed. Governor Hochul recently met with President Trump, who has expressed opposition to the program. This week, Morning Consult polled New York State voters and found 66% of those who regularly drive into the district support congestion pricing.
